Answer :
Are you looking just for HITS? Because, honestly, the Eagles' "The Last Resort" blew "Hotel California" out of the water as far as quality of song goes -- but it wasn't ever a "hit."
Good luck on the project, that's quite ambitious!
EDIT: thanks for the answer.
1947: "Cool Water" - Sons of the Pioneers
1951: "It's All in the Game" - Tommy Edwards (also works for 1958)
1960: "Only the Lonely" - Roy Orbison
1969: "Up on Cripple Creek" - the Band or "Loan Me a Dime" by Boz Scaggs (a lot of people consider this Duane Allman's greatest guitar work ever)
1972: "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters" - Elton John
1981: "Tempted" - Squeeze
1983: "Everyday I Write the Book" - Elvis Costello
1984: "The Boys of Summer" - Don Henley
1985: "Road to Nowhere" - Talking Heads
1986: "She's a Runaway" - BoDeans

Answer :
1997 was a great year. One of my favorites actually. All that is a lot to take in, but I'll throw out a couple suggestions for the gaps I noticed, and suggest that in my opinion Paul Simon's the Boy in the Bubble was the track of 1986.
97, some highlights (and I'll try to keep it mostly on the radar):
Blur - Beetlebum (though most would say Song 2 from that record)
Built to Spill - I Would Hurt a Fly
Elliott Smith - Angeles
Pavement - Transport is Arranged (more might say Shady Lane though)
Radiohead - Paranoid Android
Folk Implosion - Insinuation
2005:
Mars Volta - the Widow
Sufjan Stevens - Jacksonville
(hmm, 2005 is kind of tough. not a bad year, but not a ton of songs specifically that jump out)
I guess I would also suggest
2001 - the Shins - Caring is Creepy (or perhaps New Slang)
